Jamie Gorelick in the Spotlight
Jamie S. Gorelick is a practiced American attorney who is nationally recognized for her previous positions as the U.S. Deputy Attorney General (1994 to 1997) and General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Defense (1993 to 1994), for which she was awarded the Secretary of Defense Distinguished Service Medal. At present, Jamie Gorelick serves as a law partner in the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm WilmerHale, particularly in the firm's Regulatory and Government Affairs Department and its Litigation and Controversy Department. Jamie Gorelick is also the co-chair of the firm's Defense and National Security Council Group and chair of the Public Policy and Strategy Practice Group. Jamie Gorelick joined the firm in 2003.
Jamie Gorelick graduated magna cum laude in 1972 from the Harvard University where she became the Radcliffe Orator. She then earned her J.D. cum laude from the Harvard Law School in 1975. In 1997, Gorelick was a recipient of the Radcliffe College Alumnae Recognition Award and she has been a lecturer numerous times for law schools around the country discussing corporate governance and business ethics.
Jamie Gorelick’s previous professional undertakings also includes holding the position of Vice Chairman of Fannie Mae from 1997 to 2003; joining the Washington-based law firm Miller, Cassidy, Larroca and Lewin from 1975 to 1979 and rejoining the firm from 1980 to 1993; and being appointed assistant to the U.S. Department of Energy Secretary.
Jamie Gorelick has been active not only in government and legal affairs but has also a number of corporate and nonprofit boards over the years. Jamie Gorelick has been serving as Director of Schlumberger Ltd. since 2002; Director of United Technologies Inc. since 2000; and has been a member of the External Advisory Council for BP America Inc. since 2007. She also served on Lucent Technologies' Government Advisory Board from 2005 to 2006.
Her nonprofit work includes serving on the boards of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Urban Institute, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Washington Legal Clinic for the homeless, the American Bar Foundation, Best Lawyers in America, and the Council on Foreign Relations. Her previous nonprofit affiliations include serving on the boards of the National Park Foundation, the District of Columbia Bar Foundation, the Foundation for Change, Harvard Board of Overseers, the Overseer's Committee to Visit Harvard College; The National Women's Law Center, the Council of the American Law Institute, and the Mental Health Law Project.
